• Joel Granfors sits second in GB3 Championship after four meetings
  • Daventry team pushing in tight Teams’ Championship fight
  • Mikkel Grundtvig looking to continue winning run as Zak Taylor chases podium

Fortec Motorsport take a diversion from the British circuits as they travel to the picturesque Spa-Francorchamps in Belgium this weekend (23/24 July) hoping for further success in the latest trio of GB3 Championship races.

The Daventry-based squad have three victories to their name in the 2022 season so far in a mightily close title battle, and have their sights set firmly on success in both championships still as they leave the UK for three races around the famous 3.5-mile Formula 1 circuit located within the Ardennes.

It is a circuit that holds fond memories for the Fortec team, with the third and final race of last year’s visit being one of the most prominent highlights as Roberto Faria led home a clean sweep of the top three podium places in a keynote moment of that particular campaign.

Second place in that race was the man who claimed the team’s most recent race victory in the GB3 Championship, Mikkel Grundtvig. The Danish driver added his fourth win in the series and a second of 2022 last time out at Snetterton with an impressive lights-to-flag performance under extreme pressure, and will want to continue that form to aid the team’s push at the Teams’ Championship.

Heading the Fortec Motorsport charge in the Drivers’ Championship is the team’s British F4 graduate, Joel Granfors. The teenage rookie sensation from Sweden has been a consistent frontrunner this season, claiming two pole positions and one win to enter the visit to Spa-Francorchamps sitting second in the Drivers’ Championship. Granfors sits 11 points behind Luke Browning, having battled the British driver in an intense Snetterton duel.

Fortec’s third young charger was otherwise very unlucky not to have ended the trip to Norwich with silverware of his own. Zak Taylor gave chase to his team-mate Grundtvig but fell out of podium contention early on, in a race he otherwise admitted could have ended in victory – something he hopes to put right on the trip to Belgium.

The fifth meeting again features three sprint races, with qualifying instead kicking off on the Friday afternoon at 15:35 to decide the grid. Saturday features races one and two which kick off at 13:50 and 18:50 respectively, with race three taking place at 10:35 on Sunday and featuring a reversed grid from qualifying.

All three races will once again be streamed online and free to watch on MSV TV’s YouTube page with live timing by TSL Timing alongside it. You can also keep up to date as ever through Fortec Motorsport’s social media channels.

Oliver Dutton, Team Manager said:

“The visit to Spa is always a highlight for the championship and is one that the drivers especially look forward to. They all want to impress on the big stage and get the most out of the experience, and all three showed good pace during the most recent visit which we hope we can keep improving on to get back to the head of the championship standings. Last year we finished in the best possible way at Spa, so another result like that would be more than welcome!”

#21 Zak Taylor

“I’m looking forward to Spa. It’s obviously a great circuit and we definitely had the pace at the end of the last meeting. It’s going to be my first ever car race in Europe so I’m looking forward to that and seeing if we can rectify the results from Snetterton.”

#43 Mikkel Grundtvig

“Spa will be a very exciting one for us and of course I have some good memories of racing there. I had a podium last season, so let’s now try and win there this time like we did at Snetterton. It’s not quite been going how I planned in terms of luck this season, but we are still getting wins and I will keep fighting.”

#50 Joel Granfors

“It’s absolutely all to play for and I feel really confident with the pace we have at the moment. I’m up for the fight. We’re at the front pretty much everywhere we go so let’s hope for a good qualifying and see if we can close back up to Luke in the points.”
